Why: The mission of the John Brockington Foundation is to create a culture in which organ donation is commonplace; to provide financial and resource support for those donating, awaiting, and/or receiving organs; and to promote health education to minority communities who are disproportionately represented on the transplant waiting list.

The John Brockington Foundation began in December 2002 with the first Pro Athletes For Life Gala—proceeds from the annual gala funded the San Diego NKF patient assistance program in San Diego for the next two years. With the closure of the San Diego office of NKF in March 2004, JBF has become the sole source of local kidney programming in the county. We count among our partners the major nephrology, dialysis, transplant, and minority community organizations in San Diego.

Ongoing programs:
JBF assists San Diegans at every step along the continuum of chronic kidney disease:
​
Stage I—IV Prevent and Educate:
Keeping Inside the Numbers (KIN) Brunches provide education, screenings, and self- management tools to at risk populations to delay the progression of CKD.

Stage V Sustain:
JBF distributes over $36,000 in food vouchers annually to dialysis patients in 35 area clinics. As needed, funds are directed to pre-transplant patients to ready them for transplant (all organs). A 6 month pilot program providing free protein supplements has concluded, leading to a summer 2013 program.
Transplant: The FanForLife campaign promotes donor registration and raises funds for the 1800 San Diegans who wait on the list.
